Scottish Business and Industrial History

The Business Archives Council of Scotland publishes the Scottish Business and Industrial History journal, which contains articles by professional historians, archivists and independent scholars, covering a wide range of topics on Scotland’s business and industrial past.

The journal formerly known as Scottish Industrial History has been published by BACS since 1977 and is devoted to the dissemination of original historical research into all periods and facets of Scotland’s industrial and business past. The journal is provided as part of the annual subscription to the Business Archives Council of Scotland, and as well as containing scholarly articles, it also reports on the Council’s activities and on developments concerning Scotland’s business and industrial archives.

The latest edition of the journal volume 33 was published in January 2023. Back copies of the journal have been digitised and are available from 1977 through a partnership with TownsWeb Archiving. The BACS Microsite is powered by PastView and allows for key word searching across our journal and newsletters. You can learn more about the launch of our digitised back catalogue and the benefits of the management and publishing platform PastView here.

The BACS journal is in the process of setting up a new editorial board and will relaunch in 2024. The journal will welcome submissions from both archivists and historians on all aspects of business and industrial history and archives. The new journal will offer a space in which professionals and academics can enter into a dialogue and learn from their respective practices and research.

If you are interested in contributing or helping to shape the new journal then please come back to these pages in December for further information.
