The Journal of the Business Archives Council of Scotland (BACS)

In 2024 the BACS has relaunched it’s journal under a new title Business and Industrial History: A Journal of Archival Research in partnership with the University of Glasgow. Our journal is for archivists and historians to share and develop knowledge and awareness of business and industrial history and archives both in Scotland and internationally.

We are currently seeking submissions for papers for our 2024 special issue on the whisky industry. Find out more here.

Scottish Business and Industrial History

The Business Archives Council of Scotland published it’s journal as Scottish Business and Industrial History from 2011-2023 and it contained articles by professional historians, archivists and independent scholars, covering a wide range of topics on Scotland’s business and industrial past.

The journal also known as Scottish Industrial History (1977-2010) has been published by BACS since 1977 and is devoted to the dissemination of original historical research into all periods and facets of Scotland’s industrial and business past. The journal continues today and is provided as part of the annual subscription to the Business Archives Council of Scotland, and as well as containing scholarly articles, it also reports on the Council’s activities and on developments concerning Scotland’s business and industrial archives.

The latest edition of the journal volume 33 was published in January 2023. Back copies of the journal have been digitised and are available from 1977 through a partnership with TownsWeb Archiving. The BACS Microsite is powered by PastView and allows for key word searching across our journal and newsletters. You can learn more about the launch of our digitised back catalogue and the benefits of the management and publishing platform PastView here.

You can still download pdf versions of the journal up to the 2014 by clicking on the title below. The digitised content on our PastView website allow for quicker loading and searching by keywords, title and author so we recommend using that site for access now.  An index for the journal is available by author and subject.
